Question: How is the method of contemplation of the four thorough inquiries [taught] in the various teachings? Answer: As for the contemplation of thorough inquiry explained in sūtras and treatises, there are briefly three kinds: first, four thorough inquiries; second, six thorough inquiries; third, three thorough inquiries, also called seeking to know. There are five major sections: first, listing the names and the intent behind the arising of the teachings; second, explaining their meaning and revealing the differences in scope between host and guest; third, clarifying their nominal and real [status] in relation to the three natures; fourth, clarifying their depth and shallowness and revealing the scope of contemplation in relation to as-it-isness; fifth, distinguishing the stages and grounds and resolving doubts through questions and answers.
