Eighth, clarifying sudden and gradual: if at the dust mote one understands that illusory marks cannot be apprehended and only then sees animitta; understands that the dust mote lacks intrinsic nature and only then sees anutpāda; understands that the form of the dust mote lacks essence and only then sees emptiness—deducing in this way before seeing is called gradual. Now, not waiting for deduction but directly seeing the lack of intrinsic nature and empty tranquility of all dharmas, like a mirror reflecting images without waiting for a sequence, manifesting immediately upon facing conditions, is sudden.
