I hope that those who cherish the Way will occasionally open and examine it; it will suffice to prevent committing extreme penalties and remove long-standing deep confusions. However, human sentiments are narrow and suspicious, and entanglements are not lacking: those managing affairs favor the permanent property and drag light property into heavy, while individual monastics selfishly seek their own benefit and drag heavy property into light. Overturning and confusing their darkened minds, this serves as a stern warning throughout all antiquity (such as hearing that six hundred bolts of silk were classified as heavy property, while folding screens were classified as light property). Renunciants who rely on the Way must exert their minds even more; base and shallow worldly sentiments must long have been cast aside. Moreover, regarding peripheral and border regions, China and foreign lands, rituals, forms, and utensils, as customs are different, the names of objects are also distinct. If all are judged by analogy, knowing that light and heavy are naturally distinguished, and if one surveys from beginning to end, it will suffice as a mirror and a model.
