The five items above, the maxims of the scriptures and texts, are precisely the ford and path for entering the Way, the ultimate endeavors for deliverance. If one does not practice and study them, comprehending them from beginning to end, mastering their key points, and awakening to their entryways, then though boats and carts vie to be loaded, if one does not embark, they are ultimately not vessels of deliverance. Though the guidelines of the teachings are set forth, if one does not understand them, one vainly squanders luminous times. Therefore, one must constantly read and investigate, perusing their principles and meanings; they may be kept in mind, with no expectation of their classification as heavy property. Thus the Vinayamātṛkā says that if the scriptures and vinaya had a prior entrustment, they are delivered to that person; if there was no entrusted person, they are given to whoever can uphold them, and that person should advance and practice in accordance with the teachings, not merely guard and protect them. Thus the treatise says that the Buddhadharma values practice as taught, not much reading and reciting. People today often greedily hoard them without the intention to drink and absorb them; such people are not suited to what is entrusted, and they must be given to virtuous persons. If there remain remnants of brushes, ink, paper, silk, and so forth, as well as containers holding scriptures that originally had no other use, they should be used in their original place; wherever the scriptures and texts reside, offerings must be fully provided. For those not definitively assigned, they are divided between the two saṅghas according to whether the matter is light or heavy. If one accumulated much paper and ink merely intended for livelihood and not originally for scriptural use, it should be classified as heavy property.
