"There are sentient beings with large bellies and slender necks who cannot swallow food, and if they eat anything, it turns into pus and blood. What sin has caused this?" The Buddha said: "In former lives, they stole the community's food, or when preparing fine foods for large assemblies, secretly took hemp and rice to eat in secluded places; they were stingy with their own possessions and only coveted those of others; they constantly harbored evil intentions, giving others poison so their breath was cut off. Thus they receive this retribution of sin."
