Whether of minds or of paths, the incorrect ones are extremely numerous; we have merely stated ten in brief. One may open the upper and combine the lower, or open the lower and combine the upper, simply to complete the number of ten. Citing one kind is merely the starting point of discussion; the strongest pulls first. As the treatise says: 'A mind that breaks the precepts falls into hell; a stingy and greedy mind falls among hungry ghosts; a shameless mind falls among animals.' This is precisely its meaning. Or an incorrect mind arises first, or a correct mind arises first, or the correct and incorrect arise together, just as elephants, fish, and wind all muddy a pond: the elephant exemplifies the external, the fish exemplifies the internal, and the wind exemplifies their simultaneous arising. Furthermore, the elephant exemplifies various incorrect states arising from outside; the fish exemplifies the weakness of inner contemplation being shaken by the two extremes; and the wind exemplifies the commingling of internal and external, turbidly blended.
