Now, the Buddha-Dharma has two expositions: first, embracing; second, refuting. Just as the "Practices of Ease" does not speak of shortcomings, which is the meaning of embracing; the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra speaks of taking up knives and clubs even to the point of decapitation, which is the meaning of refuting. Although "granting" and "stripping away" take different paths, both bring benefit. If views are in saṃsāra, they must be cut off completely; if they assist in refining the spirit and turning the mind toward the correct, they can all be embraced.
