2.77

次、歷精進善。舊云：「精進無別體，但篤眾行。」義而推之，應有別體。例無明通入眾使，更別有無明。今且寄誦經，勤策其心，以擬精進；晝夜不虧乃得滑利。而非三昧、慧。

Next, passing through the good of vigor. Formerly, it was said: 'Vigor has no distinct substance, but merely intensifies all practices.' Deducing by principle, it should have a distinct substance. Analogous to ignorance pervading all proclivities, yet there is still a distinct ignorance. For now, we take reciting sūtras, diligently spurring the mind, to represent vigor; only by failing not day or night does one attain fluency. Yet this is not samādhi or wisdom.
