In the perfect teaching, both teaching and realization are inconceivable. Why is this? The ultimate principle is beyond expression, yet for the sake of conditions there are four expositions; there are only provisional designations, and the designation of a provisional designation is fundamentally unarisen. Therefore both teaching and realization are inconceivable. Free of thought and reflection, there is no reliance, conceptual proliferation, or bound karma; without karma there is no birth and death—this is called attainment in self-cultivation. Having attained the real substance, one is able to expound with the ineffable to transform and guide sentient beings, causing them to transcend birth and death and attain the real substance—this is attaining the substance for both oneself and others.
