2. Calming and contemplation subsuming all delusions: Because of delusion regarding truth, the delusions of birth and death arise. Delusion is avidyā. If one is deluded about expedient principle, then there is avidyā within the realm, both associated and solitary. That which unites with the proclivities of view and thought is called "associated"; that which does not unite is called "solitary." Not knowing this matter, one gives rise to craving. Not knowing is "avidyā"; giving rise to craving is "saṃskāra"; the craver is "vijñāna"; consciousness arising together with the four aggregates is "nāmarūpa"; form moving the sense faculties is the "ṣaḍāyatana"; that which the six sense faculties adhere to is "sparśa"; contact following upon the sense objects is "vedanā"; that which feeling delights in is "tṛṣṇā"; clinging arising together with craving is "upādāna"; creating karma for future rebirth is "bhava"; the arising of future aggregates is "jāti"; the maturation of aggregates is "jarā"; abandoning the aggregates is "maraṇa." These twelve [links] of the wheel mutually serve as cause and effect: afflictions lead to karma; karma leads to suffering; suffering leads to afflictions; hence they are called the "three paths."
