四、學問者，讀誦經論、問答勝負等是也。領持記憶，心勞志倦；言論往復，水濁珠昏，何暇更得修止觀耶？此事尚捨，況前三務（云云）。

Fourth, worldly learning: reciting scriptures and treatises, debating victory and defeat, and the like. Holding and memorizing strains the mind and fatigues the will; back-and-forth debate muddies the water and dims the pearl. What leisure remains to cultivate calming and contemplation? Even this matter must be abandoned, how much more so the previous three engagements (and so forth).
