“Furthermore, good man! A distracted mind is the evil among evils. It is like an unhooked rutting elephant trampling a flower pond; a camel with a pierced nose overturning its load; faster than a lightning flash, more poisonous than a serpent's tongue. It layers the five cataracts, obscuring the radiant sun; eyelids close and skies afar are both unseen. If you can cultivate concentration, it is like a lamp in a dark room capable of destroying great darkness; when the golden probe removes the film, the empty sky and forms become clear and bright, and one finger, two fingers, three fingers are all discerned. A great rain can settle clamorous dust; great concentration can quiet wild frenzy. Calming can shatter distraction, and false delusion is extinguished!” With skillful means and various causes and parables, one extensively praises calming, shattering his torpor and distraction. This is called “calming the mind by pacifying it in accordance with antidote.”
