If that person says, “When I hear of quiescent cessation, it does not enter my heart at all; but when I hear of analytical differentiation, I listen and receive without satiety,” one should speak to him: “The burning of the three evil destinies, the heavy pain of camels and donkeys, and the hunger and thirst of hungry ghosts are not yet called suffering; to be darkened by folly with no hearing, not knowing direction or orientation, is indeed great suffering. There is the joy of extensive hearing and analytical differentiation; the joy of Dharma-delight upon seeing phenomena; the joy of attacking evil with good; the unattached arhat is called the greatest joy. From a person of extensive hearing one hears the joy of amṛta; contemplating in accordance with the teaching, one knows the path and the non-path, keeps far away from pits and pitfalls, and proceeds straight ahead without turning back.” With skillful means and various causes and parables, one extensively praises contemplation, causing his sentiments to rejoice. This is called “calming the mind by contemplating in accordance with inclination.”
