'Simple four views' means grasping at existence, grasping at nonexistence, grasping at both existence and nonexistence, and grasping at neither existence nor nonexistence. With respect to the single view of existence, one further gives rise to sharp and dull [proclivities]: positing that there is a self, and that the self coexists with existence, constantly giving rise to the mind of self and corresponding with the self, is precisely the 'view of self'; because of calculating a self, one can generate 'extreme views'; because of the self and extremes, one destroys worldly and transworldly cause and effect, which is precisely 'wrong view'; clinging to this as the path and hoping to reach nirvāṇa is called 'attachment to precepts'; holding this to be real and all others to be false speech, not accepting other views, is called 'attachment to views'; regarding what belongs to oneself with 'craving'; regarding what is not one's own with 'anger'; giving rise to 'conceit' when thinking 'I understand and others do not'; failing to recognize suffering and origination within the view of existence is 'ignorance'; wavering without resolve is 'doubt.' In this way, the ten anusayas traverse the four truths of the desire realm: under 'suffering' all ten are fully present; under 'origination' there are seven, excluding body[-view], extreme [views], and attachment to precepts; under 'path' there are eight, excluding body[-view] and extreme [views]; under 'cessation' there are seven, excluding body[-view], extreme [views], and attachment to precepts—together making thirty-two anusayas. Traversing the four truths of the form realm, there are twenty-eight; the formless realm is also like this, similarly excluding anger. In total there are eighty-eight anusayas.
