"Complete or incomplete" means: if all ten are present, it is called complete; if nine or fewer, it is called incomplete. In both sequential and non-sequential, mixed and unmixed, completeness and incompleteness are discussed. Furthermore, there are comprehensive completeness and comprehensive incompleteness, as well as specific completeness and specific incompleteness: all ten present is comprehensive completeness; the ten not being detailed and thorough is comprehensive incompleteness; fewer than nine is specific incompleteness; being detailed and thorough within the nine is specific completeness. Furthermore, there are horizontal completeness and horizontal incompleteness, vertical completeness and vertical incompleteness. For example, arising from the four dhyānas up to [the stage of] neither-perception-nor-non-perception is vertical completeness; reaching only [the stage of] nothingness is vertical incompleteness. Arising of the clear penetrations, the liberations, and so forth is horizontal completeness; arising only of the seven liberations is horizontal incompleteness. Again, arising from the first dhyāna up to the fourth dhyāna is vertical completeness; reaching only up to the third dhyāna is vertical incompleteness. Again, all nine grades of the first dhyāna is vertical completeness; reaching only eight grades is vertical incompleteness. Again, all five factors present in a single grade is horizontal completeness; four factors or fewer is horizontal incompleteness. The rest can be understood by analogy (and so on).
