If in the first dhyāna one destroys obstacles regarding phenomena, the intermediate [dhyāna] arises; when dying here, one is not reborn in the second dhyāna. It is analogous to the obstacles regarding nature in the desire realm not being removed, so that one is not reborn in the first dhyāna. Now, in the first dhyāna when nature is broken through, the second dhyāna immediately arises, born together with joy, having the four limbs of tranquility, joy, pleasure, and so forth. Within this there is relishing, greed, arrogance, and ignorance, each having nine grades. Each grade has the three provisionalities: inner purity as a mental object uniting with the mental faculty is conditioned arising; the mind of inner purity being produced in continuity; and having inner purity in contrast to non-inner purity—these are the three provisionalities. If one does not contemplate and inspect them, one undergoes rebirth in accordance with dhyāna. Now, using calming and contemplation, one cultivates and accomplishes expedients and superior progress, severing delusions without obstruction and realizing the true through liberation, entering into the non-arising of phenomena and principle. If one has not yet entered, further contemplating continuity and relativity is also like this. The remaining eight grades are also like this; ignorance, arrogance, and so forth are also like this.
