The second dhyāna also has obstacles regarding phenomena and obstacles regarding nature. When phenomena are removed, the intermediate arises; when nature is removed, the third dhyāna arises, arising together with bliss. This bliss is deep and subtle; sages are able to renounce it, but ordinary people find it difficult to renounce. Within this there is attachment, arrogance, and ignorance, totaling nine grades, and each grade has the three provisionalities. Bliss facing the mental faculty, the mind of bliss continuing, and having bliss in contrast to having no bliss [are the three provisionalities]. If one does not contemplate, one undergoes rebirth in accordance with dhyāna. Now, using the contemplative wisdom of the four options to destroy them, through expedients and superior progress, one severs delusions without obstruction and realizes the true through liberation, accomplishing the non-arising of phenomena and principle. If they are not yet removed, further cultivating continuity, relativity, and the remaining eight grades is also like this. The nine grades of ignorance and arrogance are also like this.
