If one cultivates the four contemplations and shatters the four inversions, the mind of the Way surges up and great terror arises. It is like being pursued by an enemy, like fleeing an enemy state, like traveling a perilous path, alarmed and hurried in every thought-moment, seeking only a way out. A roe deer hearing the hunting circle is suddenly startled and runs desperately; even if it encounters water and grass, how would it have leisure to drink and eat? Its aim is escape and release; the śrāvaka is like this.
