If the mind is genuine and free from deceit, it can evoke the Tathāgata to emit the light of dāna, illuminating and removing the obscurity of stinginess. This is as explained in the Siyi and elsewhere. Because of being touched by this light, one accords with the limbs of bodhi of letting go among the various factors of the path, each of which should be explained. When phenomenal practice and noumenal contemplation are both perfected, one is able to achieve ultimate giving: viewing wealth as excrement and dirt, regarding the body as a vessel of poison, and seeing life as a drifting cloud, casting aside all three like spittle. When the hindrance of stinginess has been broken and the principle of the remedial path is accomplished, liberation is immediately attained. If there is no specific occasion, one relies on this [giving] to practice the path; where there is benefit [to others], one gives it away as though discarding a mustard seed. This is phenomenal oil assisting the brilliance of the path, opening the three doors of liberation, and enabling one to see the Buddha-nature. If one cannot do so, there is no benefit of remedial assistance.
