If one clings to anger, one should use the mind of loving-kindness (maitrī) as the remedy. The above pāramitā of patience is a general remedy; here we specifically address the immeasurable mind of loving-kindness. The other three minds are based on aspiration and so forth. Compassion as the remedy means: conditioning the suffering of sentient beings, giving rise to deep sorrow and wishing to pull them out of suffering; entering dhyāna conditioned on this mind, one accords with compassion. Loving-kindness means imagining sentient beings obtaining joy; entering conditioned on this mind, one accords with the dhyāna of loving-kindness. Joy means imagining sentient beings obtaining joy and giving rise to great delight; entering conditioned on this mind, one accords with the dhyāna of joy. Equanimity means abandoning thoughts of love and hate, abiding in the contemplation of equality; entering conditioned on this mind, one accords with the dhyāna of equanimity. One who attains these four dhyānas will have no way for anger toward sentient beings to arise. This will be explained in greater detail below.
