Wholesome signs are numerous; for now we briefly treat them in terms of the six perfections. As for the manifestation of signs of giving: if during sitting meditation one suddenly sees superior realms of fields of merit, images of the Three Jewels, assemblies of sages of great virtue, parents, teachers, and monks, or practitioners, accepting one's offerings; or sees the field of compassion accepting offerings; or sees both fields, and although they do not accept offerings, they are all joyful; or does not see the various fields whether accepting or not, but only sees articles of giving set out in abundance; or does not see given articles, but only sees clean ground; or signs indicating retribution for giving in the present life; or signs indicating retribution for giving in past lives; or sees a person who loves practicing giving come before one and praise generous giving. Things such as these are all manifested signs of retribution effects. Next, one does not see any signs at all, but one's mind stirs with swelling intensity, desiring to practice charity and reverently make offerings to the Three Jewels, parents, teachers, and monks; or feeling sorrow for the poor and suffering and desiring to relieve them; or penetrating the Dharma-door of giving and becoming exceptionally clear about it oneself. Minds such as these are all manifested signs of habituated causes. Or one may first give rise to this mind and subsequently see retribution signs; or first see retribution signs and subsequently give rise to this mind; or both may arise together; or they may arise indeterminately—this can be known by inference.
