When signs of precepts manifest, there are also six meanings. If one sees the ten preceptors, robes and bowls, the ordination platform, and the karmavācanā, rejoicing and cherishing them; or, although not seeing these signs, sees one's own clothing clean and pure and one's deportment surpassing the assembly; or sees one who constantly observes precepts with a glowing and lustrous face and composed deportment come to praise the precepts. Signs such as these are all the manifestation of retribution effects of observing precepts. Or at times one does not see these signs at all, but a mind of observing precepts arises with swelling intensity, saying to oneself that even the minor offences are not trivial enough to neglect observing; or desiring to correct those who break precepts and bring them all into accordance with the Dharma; or spontaneously understanding the Vinaya texts and mastering the categories of precepts. This is the manifestation of habituated causes. Whether earlier, later, together, or mixed can be understood by inference.
