Third, discriminating how the manifestation of wholesome and unwholesome signs differs in being an obstacle: it may be non-obstacle yet an obstacle, an obstacle yet non-obstacle, both obstacle and non-obstacle being an obstacle, or both obstacle and non-obstacle not being an obstacle. As for non-obstacle yet an obstacle: if a person first manifests wholesome signs, at that time they rejoice, but later give rise to attachment and arrogance, looking down on others; relying on these verified signs as a basis for haughtiness, they gradually become tainted by fame and profit, and faults and afflictions multiply; their mind regresses and the Dharma is ruined, they abandon the precepts and return to lay life, committing every unwholesome deed. How could this not be that an unwholesome great obstacle is subsequently brought about due initially to a wholesome non-obstacle? As for an obstacle yet non-obstacle: like one who first manifests unwholesome signs, feeling shame and dread, diligently repents this unwholesome karma, cuts off the continuous mind so that sin never arises again, and diligently practices all wholesome deeds until accomplishing the great matter. How could this not be that a non-obstacle is subsequently brought about due initially to an obstacle? Both being an obstacle and both not being an obstacle can be understood by analogy (and so forth). If it is non-obstacle yet an obstacle: this is a sign manifesting when the wholesome is about to perish, the perishing of this wholesome indicating the arising of the unwholesome. If it is an obstacle yet non-obstacle: this is a sign manifesting when the unwholesome is about to perish, this unwholesome indicating the arising of the wholesome. If both obstacle and non-obstacle are not an obstacle: this sign indicates that the wholesome does not perish and the unwholesome does not arise. If both obstacle and non-obstacle are an obstacle: this indicates that the unwholesome does not perish and the wholesome does not arise. This is spoken with respect to the initial wholesome, meaning the wholesome is not an obstacle and the unwholesome is an obstacle, differentiated as above.
