Third, explaining impediments and disturbances: When the hard, soft, and other arrows initially shoot at the five faculties, there are three faults: first, causing illness in a person; second, losing the contemplative mind; third, attaining erroneous dharmas. Illness has various characteristics: what enters through the eyes sickens the liver, and the remaining faculties can be known by inference. When the body encounters the suffering of illness, the mind becomes confused and distraught, losing dhyāna and leading to death. Losing the contemplative mind: the wholesome dharmas of the contemplation originally practiced are peaceful, but after seeing and hearing through the five faculties, the state of mind becomes bewildered and loses its order. Erroneous dharmas: the characteristics of error should be distinguished with reference to ten kinds of correct dharmas.
