First, as for the symptoms of illness: if one is skilled in medicine, one cleverly understands the four great elements. A superior physician listens to the voice, a mediocre physician observes the complexion, and an inferior physician diagnoses the pulse. Here there is no need to discriminate medical methods in detail, but merely to have a general knowledge. The method of the pulse belongs to the medical art and cannot be fully spoken of. To briefly show the symptoms of illness in the five viscera: if the pulse is surging and straight, it is a symptom of liver disease; if light and floating, it is a symptom of heart disease; if sharp, rushing, and piercing, it is a symptom of lung disease; if like a string of pearls, it is a symptom of kidney disease; if sunken, heavy, and sluggish, it is a symptom of spleen disease. The details are as explained by the physicians.
