Regarding genuinely giving rise to the bodhi-mind: if one gives rise to compassion and vows based on the twelve links of dependent origination that are subject to arising and ceasing, without arising and ceasing, or provisional designations, this is not genuine. Therefore the Avataṃsaka Sūtra speaks of "the māra of the bodhi-mind"; this is its meaning. If one gives rise to compassion based on the inconceivable twelve links of dependent origination, sheltering and liberating all beings, this is called genuine. Uprooting suffering has two aspects: first, uprooting the five causal sufferings of the ten dharmadhātus—ignorance, craving, grasping, karmic formations, and existence; second, uprooting the seven resultant sufferings of the ten dharmadhātus—consciousness, name-and-form, [and the rest]. Giving joy with loving-kindness is also like this. That is, giving the ten dharmadhātus contemplation of ignorance, craving, and grasping to accomplish the correct path of wisdom practice, and transforming karmic formations and existence into the auxiliary path of action practice: this is called "giving the cause of joy." Contemplating the seven branches of name-and-form and the rest across the ten realms as entirely possessing the nature of peace and bliss, which is great nirvāṇa that cannot be extinguished again, is called "giving the result of joy." In terms of these four meanings, one generates the four universal vows: to rescue those not yet rescued, rescuing the suffering of birth-and-death in the seven branches across the ten realms; to liberate those not yet liberated, liberating the accumulation of the five branches of ignorance, craving, grasping, karmic formations, and existence across the ten realms; to bring peace to those not yet at peace, establishing the correct and auxiliary paths of ignorance, craving, grasping, karmic formations, and existence across the ten realms; to cause those who have not attained nirvāṇa to attain it, [attaining] the peaceful and blissful nirvāṇa of the seven branches of consciousness and the rest, and so forth.
