As for the inconceivable contemplation: if a single thought-moment of concentrated mind arises—whether tainted, pure, or even supernormal powers—one immediately knows that this mind is avidyā, dharmatā, and the dharmadhātu. The ten realms and hundred dharmas, immeasurable concentration and distraction, are completely contained within a single thought-moment. Why is this? Because of delusion regarding dharmatā, there are all distracted and unwholesome dharmas; because of understanding dharmatā, there are all concentrated dharmas. Since concentration and distraction are identical to avidyā, avidyā is also identical to dharmatā. Delusion and understanding, concentration and distraction, are non-dual in their nature; subtle and difficult to conceive, they cut off the path of language; to speculate through emotional thoughts is to tire oneself in vain; how could this be the realm of ordinary beings or the two vehicles? Although it transcends common sentiments, it does not depart from the multitude of existences. The sūtra says: 'All sentient beings are identical to the cessation concentration.' Although the mind is called concentration, sentient beings are never purely it, nor are sentient beings never it. Why? If one departs from sentient beings, where could one seek concentration? Therefore, sentient beings are never not it. If one is identical to sentient beings, concentration is not sentient beings; therefore, sentient beings are never it. Not being it, they are not identical; not being not it, they do not depart from it; neither identical nor departed, the wonder lies within it. Inestimable as empty space, only Buddha and Buddha can fathom it to the end. Since a single thought-moment of dhyāna concentration is like this, all realms are also like this. If one suddenly awakens through contemplating in this way, merely hearing these words, the sickness of affliction is cured, and there is no need for the nine dharmas below.
