What is called cultivating calming and contemplation by engaging circumstances? The word "circumstances" refers to six kinds of circumstances: first, walking; second, standing; third, sitting; fourth, reclining; fifth, engaging in action; sixth, speaking. What is called cultivating calming and contemplation when facing objects? The word "objects" refers to the objects of the six sense fields: first, the eye facing forms; second, the ear facing sounds; third, the nose facing fragrances; fourth, the tongue facing tastes; fifth, the body facing tangible objects; sixth, the mind facing mental objects. Because practitioners cultivate calming and contemplation with reference to these twelve matters, it is called cultivating calming and contemplation by engaging circumstances and facing objects.
