First, walking: When walking, one should think thus: "For what matter do I wish to walk now? If driven by defilements, or walking for matters that are unwholesome or indeterminate, I ought not to walk. If not driven by defilements, but for matters of wholesome benefit that accord with the Dharma, I ought to walk." How does one cultivate calming while walking? When walking, one immediately knows: because of walking, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena; thoroughly knowing that the walking mind and all phenomena within walking are ungraspable, deluded thoughts then cease. This is called cultivating calming. How does one cultivate contemplation while walking? One should think thus: "Through the mind moving the body, there is advancing forward, which is termed walking. Because of this walking, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena." One should then reflexively contemplate the mind that walks, yet see no appearance [of it]. One should know that the walker and all phenomena within walking are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called cultivating contemplation.
