Second, standing: When standing, one should think thus: "For what matter do I wish to stand now? If standing for defilements, or for unwholesome or indeterminate matters, I ought not to stand. If for matters of wholesome benefit, I ought to stand." How does one cultivate calming while standing? When standing, one immediately knows: because of standing, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena; thoroughly knowing that the standing mind and all phenomena within standing are ungraspable, deluded thoughts then cease. This is called cultivating calming. How does one cultivate contemplation while standing? One should think thus: "Through the mind stationing the body, it is termed standing. Because of this standing, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena." One should then reflexively contemplate the mind that stands, yet see no appearance [of it]. One should know that the stander and all phenomena within standing are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called cultivating contemplation.
