Third, sitting: When sitting, one should think thus: "For what matter do I wish to sit now? If for defilements, unwholesome or indeterminate matters, and so forth, I ought not to sit. If for matters of wholesome benefit, I ought to sit." How does one cultivate calming while sitting? When sitting, one should thoroughly know that because of sitting, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena, yet not a single phenomenon can be grasped; deluded thoughts then do not arise. This is called cultivating calming. How does one cultivate contemplation while sitting? One should think thus: "Through the ideation of the mind, folding the legs and settling the body, because of this there are all wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena; therefore it is termed sitting." Reflexively contemplating the mind that sits, one sees no appearance [of it]. One should know that the sitter and all phenomena within sitting are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called cultivating contemplation.
