Third, cultivating calming when the nose smells fragrances: Whatever fragrance is smelled, one immediately knows it is unreal like a mirage. If smelling an agreeable fragrance, one does not give rise to attachment; if smelling a disagreeable odor, one does not give rise to anger; if smelling a fragrance that is neither disagreeable nor agreeable, one does not produce confused thoughts. This is called cultivating calming. How is it called cultivating contemplation while smelling fragrances? One should think thus: "The fragrance I now smell is deceptive and without reality. Why is that? Because faculty and object conjoin, nose consciousness arises; next, mental consciousness arises, forcefully seizing the mark of the fragrance. Because of this, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena; therefore it is termed smelling fragrances." Reflexively contemplating the mind that smells fragrances, one sees no appearance [of it]. One should know that the smelling of fragrances and all phenomena are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called cultivating contemplation.
