Such afflictions of the four great elements and five internal organs arise from causes that are manifold, and their symptoms are numerous, impossible to state in full. If a practitioner wishes to cultivate the dharma-door of calming and contemplation and an affliction should happen to arise, they should know well how it arose. These two kinds of illnesses are generally triggered by internal and external causes. If externally harmed by cold, wind, or heat, or food is not digested, and the illness arises from these two places, know that it was triggered by external causes. If caused by disharmony in applying the mind, contemplation practice going awry, or when the dharma of concentration arises one does not know how to grasp or relinquish, bringing about afflictions in these two places, these are the marks of illness triggered by internal causes.
