As for seductive spirits, they are transformations of the animals of the twelve double-hours, producing various forms and colors, or appearing in the shape of young boys, young girls, or the elderly, as well as fearsome bodily forms and the like, of more than one kind, in order to disturb the practitioner. They come, each corresponding to its respective time, and one must skillfully recognize them. If they mostly come during the hour of mǎo (5–7 a.m.), they must be foxes, rabbits, badgers, or the like; if one speaks their names, the seductive spirits will immediately disperse. The appearances for the remaining eleven double-hours can be known by analogy with this.
