Second, startling and terrifying ghosts: they also produce various disturbances for the practitioner, appearing like insects crawling over a person's head and face, drilling and piercing with a prickling sensation, or poking and striking a person under both armpits, or suddenly seizing and holding a person, or producing noisy voices and chatter, as well as assuming the forms of various beasts, manifesting extraordinary signs of more than one kind to come and disturb the practitioner. One should immediately become aware, close the eyes with a focused mind, and internally scold it, saying: 'I now recognize you! You are in this Jambudvīpa a fire-eating, scent-smelling sthūlatyatyaya, a lineage of wrong views fond of breaking precepts. I now uphold the precepts and will never fear you!' If one is a monastic, one should recite the preface to the precepts; if one is a layperson, one should recite the three refuges, the five precepts, and the bodhisattva's ten major and forty-eight minor precepts, whereupon the ghost will step backward and grovel away. Manifold forms of obstacles and difficulties produced like this, as well as the methods for dispelling them, are all explained in detail in the dhyāna sūtras.
