6.23

問曰：上說初禪行悲，此則壞於次第。如慈在前，應初禪而修慈，二禪修悲，三禪修喜，四禪修捨，何故不爾？

Question: Above, it was said that one practices compassion in the first dhyāna, but this disrupts the sequence. Since loving-kindness comes first, one should cultivate loving-kindness in the first dhyāna, compassion in the second dhyāna, sympathetic joy in the third dhyāna, and equanimity in the fourth dhyāna; why is it not so?
