As for the mental consciousness element: the five consciousnesses that newly arise act as the faculty, and in facing the external mental objects, mental consciousness arises, which is called the mental consciousness element. If one hears of the five faculties, one also knows that they correspond to the five internal viscera: the faculty of sadness corresponds to the liver, the faculty of suffering corresponds to the heart, the faculty of joy corresponds to the lungs, the faculty of pleasure corresponds to the kidneys, and the faculty of equanimity corresponds to the spleen. Through the causal conditions of the five faculties, the three realms are fully present. Why is this? The faculty of sadness corresponds to the desire realm; the faculty of suffering corresponds to the first dhyāna; the faculty of joy corresponds to the second dhyāna; the faculty of pleasure corresponds to the third dhyāna; and the faculty of equanimity corresponds to the fourth dhyāna, and even the four formless absorptions are all called dhyānas accompanied by equanimity. One should know that the three realms also correspond in meaning to the five viscera.
