Third, explaining the upper grade of vitarka and great vitarka: Using the supernormal knowledge of the divine eye to clearly see that the impermanent dharmas have differences in their eight marks is called vitarka. Awakening to the knowledge that the dharmas of the eight marks are fundamentally empty and quiescent, of one mark which is markless, is therefore called great vitarka. The remaining four supernormal knowledges are also like this. This briefly explains the characteristics of vitarka and great vitarka when seeing the phenomenal world through the five supernormal knowledges. Thinking and great thinking, contemplating the nature of the mind, and the characteristics of realizing the vitarka factor are analogous to what was stated earlier; the remaining factor of vicāra, prīti, sukha, ekāgratā, and so forth should also be differentiated one by one in this way. The practitioner should know that if śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas attain this dhyāna, by relying on concentration they obtain indestructible liberation, unhindered liberation, the three knowledges, and the six supernormal knowledges; hence it is called the contemplation of penetrating clarity. If great bodhisattva beings abide in this dhyāna, they immediately obtain the unhindered great dhāraṇī, and likewise even up to the fourth dhyāna.
