2.71

Second, explaining the sufficiency of clothing and food: Now to explain, the provisions of clothing are of three kinds: First, as with the Great Beings of the Snow Mountains and others practicing the Path, keeping only one robe is sufficient; because they do not wander among humans and their power of endurance is perfected, these are superior persons. Second, like Kāśyapa and others who always undertook the dhūta practices, keeping only the three robes of rag-cloth without needing any extra; these are the clothing provisions of middling persons. Third, in very cold lands, or if inferior persons cannot endure it, the Tathāgata additionally permitted the keeping of the hundred and one requisites and the like; yet one must declare them pure through the formal procedure and know moderation and contentment. If one greedily seeks beyond this, it will hinder the Path.
