Second, the water-wheel: Water has two meanings: first, moistening and growing; second, its nature is pliable. If within the earth-wheel the practitioner realizes the water-wheel samādhi, this is the arousal of the various virtues of the dhyānas; the water of concentration moistens the mind, and one naturally perceives the wholesome roots within the mind increasing and growing, which is the meaning of 'moistening'. Because absorption is attained, body and mind are soft and compliant, subduing haughtiness, and the mind follows wholesome dharmas, which is the meaning of 'pliable'; hence it is called the water-wheel.
