Now, taking these five unwholesome dharmas, they are combined into the three obstacles: the previous three poisons constitute the affliction obstacle of habitual causes; the chaotic dharmas of vitarka and vicāra within the equalized [disposition] are the coarse four aggregates and are therefore called the retribution obstacle; and the three kinds of path-obstructing [manifestations] are the karmic obstacle. How is this known? Because of evil created in the past, one ought to undergo evil retribution in the future, so karma sustains this evil. If a practitioner cultivates goodness in the interval before retribution is undergone, goodness and evil clash; karma then arises in support of the evil to come and obstruct the good. Thus we know it is the karmic obstacle. These three obstacles obstruct all practitioners so that dhyāna-concentration and wisdom cannot develop; hence they are called obstacles.
