Third, next is explaining the methods of counteractive treatment. 'Counter' (dui) means primarily confronting; 'treatment' (zhi) means to remedy. Just as the contemplation of the impure primarily treats sensual desire, it is called counteractive treatment. And so on up to the samādhi of mindfulness of the Buddha, which primarily treats evil karmic path-obstructions. Now, within explaining the counteractive treatments, there are naturally six different approaches: first, treatment by direct counteraction; second, treatment by shifting [the method]; third, treatment without shifting [the method]; fourth, concurrent treatment; fifth, treatment that is both concurrent-shifting and concurrent-non-shifting; sixth, treatment that is neither counteracting, nor shifting, nor concurrent.
