Furthermore, how does one counteract the arising of path-obstructing karma? Karma is of three kinds, and the methods of counteracting it are also three. First, during seated meditation, if suddenly the mind becomes defiled, dim, and dark, losing track of the object-realm, know that the obstacle of dark karma has arisen. At that time the practitioner should, within the gate of purification, be mindful of the pure radiant light of the thirty-two marks of the expediently pure response body as the antidote. Second, during seated meditation, if evil thoughts and contemplations suddenly occur, greed and desire committing every evil, this also is the doing of past sinful karma. At that time the practitioner should, within the gate of purification, be mindful of the completely pure, permanent, and blissful merits of the reward Buddha's sarvākārajñatā as the antidote. Third, during seated meditation, if signs of various evil realms appear, even oppressing the body and mind, know that these all arise from the obstacle of evil karma created in the past and present life. At that time the practitioner should, within the gate of purification, be mindful of the dharma body being originally pure, neither arising nor ceasing, fundamentally pure by nature, as the antidote. This is a brief explanation of the signs of the six gates as antidotes cutting off and eliminating the three obstacles; explained in detail, they are not different from the fifteen kinds of obstacles.
