Fourth, what is called the perfect realization of the six wondrous gates? The practitioner takes the two kinds of six wondrous gates—the eighth, contemplation of the mind, and the ninth, perfect contemplation—as expedients; when this contemplation is completed, perfect realization immediately arises. Realization is of two kinds: first, realization through understanding: without reliance on mental intention, unhindered skillful wisdom naturally and perfectly realizes and recognizes the dharma realm, hence named realization through understanding; second, realization through union: wondrous wisdom brightly opens and unfolds, clearly illuminating the dharma realm and penetrating it without hindrance. The characteristics of realization are of two kinds: first, the marks of resemblance realization, such as the marks of the purification of the six sense faculties explained in the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra; second, the marks of true realization, such as the marks of the complete perfection of merit and wisdom at the initial resolve explained in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra.
