First, the power of [knowing] what is possible and what is impossible. The Buddha knows the fixed characteristics of the causes, conditions, and retributions of all dharmas: that from such causes and conditions such retributions arise, and from such causes and conditions such retributions do not arise. For instance, that an unwholesome karma should result in pleasant retribution—there is no such possibility; unwholesome karma cannot even attain mundane pleasure, how much less supramundane pleasure? That unwholesome conduct should lead to birth in heaven—there is no such possibility; unwholesome conduct cannot even attain birth in heaven, how much less nirvāṇa? That with the mind covered by the five hindrances and scattered, one should attain nirvāṇa although practicing the seven factors of awakening—there is no such possibility. When the mind is covered by the five hindrances, even though one cultivates the seven factors of awakening, one cannot even attain the path of the voice-hearer (śrāvaka). When the mind is uncovered, the Buddha path can be attained, how much more so the path of the voice-hearer! All such various instances of what is possible and what is impossible the Buddha knows completely and ubiquitously, indestructible and unconquerable; this is the first power.
