Second is the truth of accumulation. Accumulation has the meaning of gathering and bringing together. If the mind corresponds with defilements and karma, it will definitely be able to gather together the sufferings of birth and death in the future; hence it is called 'accumulation'. Accumulation contains three kinds of karma that subsume all karma: first, unwholesome karma, which is the ten unwholesome actions; second, wholesome karma, which is the ten wholesome actions; third, immovable karma, which is the twelve-gate dhyānas, as fully distinguished above. As for afflictions, two kinds of afflictions subsume all afflictions: first, afflictions belonging to craving; second, afflictions belonging to views. These two afflictions generate all the three poisons, five hindrances, ten afflictions, ninety-eight latent defilements, and so forth, all as distinguished above. If these afflictions unite with the aforementioned karma, they will definitely gather the painful fruits of birth and death in the three realms in the future, which is the truth of accumulation.
