Third is the truth of cessation. Cessation has the meaning of extinguishing into nonexistence. When defilements and karma are exhausted, there are no burdens of birth and death; hence it is called 'cessation'. If one generates the untainted true clarity regarding [the afflictions of] views and thoughts and possesses the thirty-four minds that sever fetters, then the ninety-eight latent defilements of the three realms are all extinguished. Because the fetters and latent defilements of affliction are extinguished, karma of the three realms is also extinguished. If the karma and afflictions of the three realms are extinguished, this is the truth of cessation as nirvāṇa with remainder. Because the cause is extinguished, the fruit is extinguished; when relinquishing this retribution body, future suffering fruits will never continue, which is called entering nirvāṇa without remainder, the true cessation and liberation. The principle of cessation is not vain; hence it is called a 'truth'.
