Next, the difficult-to-subdue samādhi destroys existence in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. These gods reside atop the Four Heavens, which constitutes retribution that is difficult to subdue, views and thoughts that are difficult to subdue, ignorance that is difficult to subdue, and nescience that is difficult to subdue. In order to destroy their haughty minds, the bodhisattva cultivates precepts, meditation, and wisdom to destroy the retribution that is difficult to subdue, and cultivates [the truths of] arising and ceasing and non-arising to destroy views and thoughts that are difficult to subdue. Through the power of personal practice, they accomplish the three [aspects of that which is] difficult to subdue; through the power of loving-kindness and compassion, they destroy the three [aspects] difficult to subdue in others. Therefore, this samādhi is named the difficult-to-subdue samādhi.
