Next, to clarify the Vaipulya division: In sūtras such as the Vimalakīrti, he censured the biased and reproved the small, while praising the great and extolling the perfect. All four teachings were preached together: the Tripiṭaka is the half-letter teaching, while the shared, distinct, and perfect are the full-letter teachings. Because the full is preached in contrast to the half, it is called the contrasting teaching. In terms of period, it is the mealtime (the third period); in terms of flavor, from curdled milk comes raw butter—here, from the nine divisions comes Vaipulya (the third, the raw butter flavor). The 'Belief and Understanding' chapter states: 'After this had passed, their minds gained mutual trust and understanding; entering and exiting without difficulty, yet his dwelling was still in the original place.' What meaning does this convey? The answer is: after the Tripiṭaka, he next preached Vaipulya; having already attained the fruits of the path, their minds gained mutual trust and understanding, so that hearing reproaches they felt no anger. Harboring shame within, their minds gradually grew mellow and refined.
