Fifth is practicing the five dharmas: First is aspiration (chanda)—because one aspires to abandon all worldly false thoughts and inversions, and aspires to attain all the gates of meditative concentration and wisdom. Second is vigor—because one firmly upholds the restrictive precepts, abandons the five hindrances, and diligently practices vigor in the early, middle, and late night. Third is mindfulness—because one is mindful that the world is deceptive, worthy of slight and contempt, while meditative concentration and wisdom are worthy of weight and honor. Fourth is skillful wisdom—deliberating the worldly pleasures versus the pleasures of meditative concentration and wisdom, their gains, losses, weight, and lightness. Fifth is single-mindedness—mindfulness and wisdom being distinctly clear, clearly seeing the world as lamentable and repulsive, and skillfully recognizing the merits of meditative concentration and wisdom as venerable and precious.
